Name: Kukwes
Alternate spellings: Gugwés, Kukwej, Kookwes, Kukwees, Gugwech, Kookwe, Gugwe’
Pronunciation: kook-wess
Type: Monster, giant

A kind of man-eating ogre. Kukwes are greedy, hairy, and sometimes described as having bear-like heads. The name “kukwes” is a diminutive form of Kuku, giant. So “kukwes” literally means something similar to “little giant.” “Little” is relative, though— Kuku (usually spelled Gougou) is sometimes described as being large enough to carry children in a sack.

A story tells of a kookwes (giant) that was prowling around, watching for prey, hunting for people. Some little boys were out hunting and saw the giants, they hid before the giants could touch them and saw the giant capturing other children. The children soon reached their home and spread the alarm. A number of the men armed in hot haste, and pursued the giant; before the day had ended, and the giant’s lair dissapears, they reached the place were the giant was cooking with another giant. They covered their arrow’s tips in animal oil. Whiz! came an arrow, and struck in the side the giant who had carried off the children; he made a slight movement, and complained of a stitch in the side. Soon another arrow followed, and another, but so silently and so swiftly that neither perceived what they were. The fellow fell slowly over, as though falling asleep; and his companion rallied him on being so sleepy and going to sleep before his tender morsel had been tasted. Soon he also began to be troubled; sharp pains began to shoot through him, and as the arrows pierced him he also fell dead.

Another story tells of how the giants can charm humans and make them part of their tribe of bear-people-giants.
